” Chinese sign for $4.3 billion worth of soybeansDes Moines Register By Dan Piller February 15, 2012 www.desmoinesregister.com Chinese agriculture leaders signed agreements to buy about 317 million bushels of soybeans worth $4.31 billion at ceremonies Wednesday at the World Food Prize Center in Des Moines. The commitments signed in Des Moines total more than 8.62 million metric tons, with more soybean commitments expected to be signed in Los Angeles in the next few days that are expected to lift the total Chinese commitment to around 12 million metric tons. Of particular significance is the fact that the purchases will be drawn from both the old crop of soybeans harvested last fall and new crop that will be planted this spring. Commodity traders had been watching for indications that China is eager to lock up some sales right away in light of drought and heat difficulties that have beset the crop in Brazil, the main U.S. rival in world soybean markets. Arlan Suderman of Farm Futures Magazine said ceremonial trade signings such as happened in Des Moines are fairly routine, but noted that “it will be seen in a more bullish light if it includes a significant amount of old-crop soybeans, suggesting that South American concerns are increasing.” Iowa Soybean Association chief executive officer Kirk Leeds said “Iowa’s soybeans farmers want to say ‘thank you for the business’ and to continue to build upon these strong relationships. We have led many delegations of farmer leaders to China and host multiple groups from China every year. Today’s signing ceremony is another indication of the value and importance of these relationships. With the additional signings later this week in Los Angeles, we are hopeful the total numbers will set a new record for U.S. soybean commitments made in one signing trip.” The agricultural trade delegation of ten Chinese companies that signed agreements is part of the visit to the U.S. by China’s vice president Xi Jinping, who arrived Wednesday afternoon in Muscatine and will attend a dinner at the Iowa State Capitol tonight. On Thursday he will participate in a trade forum with U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, then visit the Kimberley farm near Maxwell just north of Des Moines. Xi Jinping’s visit is having an impact on soybean markets, which rose 6 cents per bushel Wednesday on the Chicago Board of Trade to $12.61. Meanwhile corn fell 6 cents per bushel to $6.27 and wheat was down 9 cents to $6.26 per bushel. Another round of signings will take place later this week in Los Angeles, which is expected to bring the total purchase commitment to around 12 million metric tons, roughly equivalent to what the Chinese purchased last year. China is the largest customer of U.S. soybeans, buying about 60 percent of a typical export crop. The U.S. is the largest producer of soybeans, with a crop of about 466 million bushels in 2011. The Chinese delegation was led by Bian Zhenhu, president of the China Chamber of Commerce for Import & Export of Foodstuffs, Native Produce and Animal By-products (CFNA). U.S. companies, including ADM, AGP, Bunge, Cargill and CHS, among others. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey participated as witness to the signing ceremony. “China has been a great trade partner and a key customer of Iowa soybeans, and this agreement shows a commitment on both sides to continuing that relationship,” says Northey. “Iowa farmers are tremendously productive and exports are vital to the economic health of our state with more than $7 billion in agricultural exports. China is a rapidly increasing portion of that total, and it is important we continue to build on that strong partnership.” The Sino-U.S. Agricultural Trade Cooperation Conference and Soybean Contract Signing Ceremony was hosted by the Iowa Soybean Association (ISA), the U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC), United Soybean Board (USB) and the American Soybean Association (ASA), and attended by U.S. soybean industry representatives, USDA officials and Iowa state leaders and dignitaries, in addition to Chinese guests who included the Ministry of Commerce, People’s Republic of China (MOFCOM) delegation headed by Assistant Minister Mr. Yu Jianhua and the Hebei Provincial Commercial Delegation.
